What’s the difference between advanced learning and gifted education?

Advanced learning is for students who live in a state without an entrance exam requirement for accelerated learning courses. Gifted education, on the other hand, is for students who live in a state that requires an entrance exam to take accelerated courses. Whether your child’s K12-powered school has a gifted or advanced learning option, your child will receive the same full suite of services we have to offer.

K–8 Advanced and Gifted Learning

Many K12-powered schools provide advanced learning options for elementary and middle school students who are ready for more academic challenges. These school-specific options strive to align with the guidelines established by the National Association for Gifted Children. They may include:

  • Opportunities for acceleration: This can include grade skipping, progressing through the curriculum faster, or moving ahead a grade in a particular subject.
  • Access to advanced content: When topics are mastered at a faster pace, students can access content earlier than their peers.

  • Ability grouping: Like-minded students are grouped to connect and collaborate, fostering an engaging learning environment.
  • Bonus enrichment: Unique activities, in addition to an already robust curriculum, motivate students to quickly absorb information quickly.

  • Honors courses: Honors courses allow students to explore subjects in-depth and challenge themselves academically.
  • Independent study: Independent study allows students to engage in self-directed learning in an area of interest.

High School Advanced and Gifted Learning

K12-powered schools can be a great choice for advanced learners who want to use their high school years to dive deep or get ahead. From rigorous curriculum to the opportunity to earn college credits, high school advanced education can come with big benefits. Options vary by school, but may include:

  • Opportunities for acceleration: This can include grade skipping, moving ahead a grade in a particular subject, or early graduation.
  • Access to advanced content: Students can access advanced content when mastery is demonstrated.

  • Ability grouping: Like-minded students are grouped to connect and collaborate, fostering an engaging learning environment.
  • Bonus enrichment: Unique activities are added to an already robust curriculum to maximize learning.

  • AP® and honors courses: These courses allow students to explore subjects in-depth, challenging themselves academically.
  • Independent study: Independent study allows students to engage in self-directed learning in an area of interest.
  • Dual enrollment: Students earn college credits while in high school by completing available college courses.
